Fix Shut Off Valve Leaking at Stem

Step by step instruction showing how to stop a shut off valve from leaking at the stem.

Water shut off valves often leak at the handle or the stem after they have been turned. It’s easy to fix a bathroom sink, toilet or any other shut off valve that leaks through the stem after it’s been turned.

The packing or bonnet nut can be tightened to stop a valve that is leaking when it is open. Sometimes Teflon packing rope needs to be added under the packing nut to stop the leak.
